EligibilityAge and school status: meet one official age route: over 13 with legal parent/guardian consent, age 18 or older but under 21, or an emancipated minor over 13. Be in the final year of secondary school (including homeschooling), completing the courses needed for college applications, not graduated before the application deadline, and never entered an earlier STS. Final-year status, rather than grade 12 alone, controls eligibility. If graduation year is uncertain at entry, notify the Society by December 15, 2026 to withdraw if still uncertain or confirm graduation in the 2026/2027 academic year. Citizenship and residence: at the application deadline, students of any citizenship must attend secondary school and maintain full-time residence in the United States or the listed territories: Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Wake/Midway Islands or the Marianas. A separate route covers U.S. citizens in their final secondary-school year attending a DoD dependents school, an accredited overseas American/international school, a foreign school as an exchange student, or a foreign school while their parent/guardian temporarily works and lives abroad. Proof of citizenship and school accreditation is required for the overseas route. Research: submit one completed, original individual investigation with results. Student-team work cannot be split into individual entries; only independently completed continuation work is eligible. Adult-lab collaboration is allowed when the applicant clearly identifies and understands their own contribution. Continuation research and work completed in earlier school years are allowed. Submitted work must retain the guide’s individual-project conditions through June 1, 2027, including not combining it into a student-team project for competitions, publications or other forums. Proposals, unfinished investigations, literature reviews and essays do not qualify. Required materials: complete the online eligibility, school, disclosure, research-description, Rules Wizard, essay and activities tasks; test scores are optional. Submit a research report of no more than 20 content pages as a PDF of at most 4 MB, with title, abstract and bibliography excluded from that limit and appendices included. Use 1.5 spacing, one-inch margins and a legible font at least comparable to Times New Roman 11 pt; cite every image/table/graph, including your own, and verify references. Materials must be in English. External links are accepted only in bibliographic references or specifically requested application fields; no additional research is accepted after the cutoff. Recommendations: request the Educator Recommendation (up to two), at least one Project Recommendation (up to two), and one High School Report through the portal. The designated adults complete the forms and upload the official school transcript; generic PDF letters and mailed transcripts do not replace them. A science, engineering or math educator is preferred, but another high-school teacher is permitted. The project recommender should know the work most closely, rather than necessarily lead the lab. If research had no adult guide, a parent or teacher can confirm this; a second nonrelative recommendation is recommended for certain family/homeschool situations, not a universal requirement. All forms share the November 5, 2026, 8:00 PM Eastern deadline. Research integrity and approvals: obtain mentor permission and the required student/mentor Ethics attestations. Disclose outside help, paid mentorship, employment/contractor roles, prior relationships, conflicts and AI use; outcome-dependent mentor payments and guaranteed placement are prohibited. Follow STS scientific rules and all applicable laws, and supply relevant preapproval, consent, permit and safety documents via the Rules Wizard. Requirements and exemptions depend on the project; later approval is not a substitute for required preapproval. AI guidance: the entry/report rules prohibit generative AI drafting application responses, the report or citations. Appendix 4 separately describes limited assistance (including credited grammar refinement, cited/logged code and identified AI images) with conditions. Read both the entry rules and the table, preserve required logs/citations, and ask the Society about any uncertain boundary. These limited examples do not authorize AI-authored submissions.
